Which Brand Should I Get?

Marketing firms put a lot of effort into making it seem like some brands are better than others. The truth is, almost all brands come from six different parent companies and are mostly the same.

What's more important than brands is ensuring your new HVAC system is installed correctly. There are a lot of steps that seem insignificant during installs, but skipping them will result in pricey repairs or even early replacements down the road. Hit the button below to check out our wall of shame and see bad install practices we've come across in the field!

What Makes a "Good" Install?

A good HVAC install is all about precision and attention to detail. It starts with properly sizing the system to fit your home. An oversized system can cause issues with mold, while an undersized one won't be able to keep your home at the correct temperature.

The next important step is making sure your system and pad are leveled. Skipping this step can result in issues like: damage to your compressor from oil not being able to get where it needs to, issues with refrigerant flowing properly, and damage to your fan over time because of an uneven load to the bearings. If a company comes to your home and they don't make sure your new system is level, there's a good chance they're skipping other important steps too.

After your system is level, it'll be time to braze the copper lines (unless it's a package unit!). A good install team will have a tank of nitrogen they pump into the lines while they braze. If this step is skipped, it will cause the insides of the refrigerant lines to flake off over time and clog your system with debris. This only takes 15 minutes to do, but it's the most commonly skipped step and could cost you over $1,500 in repairs after a few years.

Once your refrigerant lines are brazed, it's time to run a pressure test. A pressure test is simply pumping nitrogen into the refrigerant lines at high pressures and checking for leaks. If the lines stay at the same pressure for 20 minutes, it means there's no leaks. Skipping this step could result in a small leak that slowly releases refrigerant. Low refrigerant means your system will have to work harder, and will eventually stop working. You may not know you have a leak for months, and by then your contractor can claim it's a new issue and charge you a repair fee for it.

Next, after your system passes a pressure test, your team should pull a vacuum on the refrigerant lines. This means that they'll vacuum out any moisture. Skipping this step will result in leftover moisture mixing with refrigerant and creating hydrochloric acid in your refrigerant lines. This will ruin the oil in your compressor and destroy its bearings. This is the second most commonly skipped step.

The next step involves hooking up gauges and balancing the correct amount of refrigerant. Too much refrigerant causes too much pressure, which causes damage to the compressor and high energy bills. Too little refrigerant will cause your compressor to overheat, your system to run longer, and your energy bills to be higher.

The final step in any good install is to check gas pressures and airflow and to make sure that everything is running perfectly. Thoroughly checking installs can take up to 1.5 hours, but it's a crucial step in making sure your unit doesn't run into avoidable problems.

If you used a company that bid suspiciously low or finished their install in two hours, it's likely they skipped the crucial "small" steps above. While it might seem like you got a great deal at the end of your install day, you'll be paying for the bad quality years down the line (likely after your warranty has run out).

Simply put, cheap installs come at a high price.
